Christopher Briffa was sentenced to 18 months in prison and a fine of €500 after accepting responsibility for charges of cocaine possession and heroin trafficking linked to a police operation in San Ġiljan.
According to MaltaToday, the court heard that Briffa was arrested on 7 May after police found cocaine in his possession in circumstances indicating it was not intended for personal use.
The prosecution stated that the offence was aggravated because it took place in a locality 100 metres from an area frequently used by young people. The investigations also revealed that Briffa was actively selling and trafficking heroin in the weeks and months leading up to his arrest.
The court noted that Briffa was a repeat offender with a history of drug-related convictions and had already been given opportunities to rehabilitate. Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo decided that a custodial sentence was inevitable, and stated that it had failed to learn from the mistakes of the past.
Inspector Pier Guido Saliba led the prosecution.
