The Malta Tax Administration and Customs Department, together with the Drug Squad of the Malta Police, intercepted approximately 113 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine in a joint operation at Malta Freeport Terminal.
According to the authorities, the seizure took place on Tuesday, 9 June after customs officials identified a container as suspicious during risk-based screening procedures.
The container had arrived from Moín, Costa Rica and was in transit through Malta towards Libya before it was subjected to detailed scanning and physical inspections.
During the search, customs officials discovered the suspected drug hidden inside legitimate merchandise.
The Drug Squad of the Police was immediately informed and assisted in securing the area and beginning further investigation procedures.
A magisterial inquiry is to be opened from this point onwards, whilst investigations continue to identify those involved in the trafficking operation that was taking place.
The authorities noted that this seizure adds to several recent interceptions that have taken place at Malta Freeport where drugs were hidden inside shipping containers.
The Malta Tax Administration and Customs Department also thanked Malta Freeport Terminals for their assistance during the operation.
