The Malta Police Corps has issued a warning to the public about new fraud affecting social media users. Messages are being distributed en masse on apps such as WhatsApp and other platforms, asking users to vote for a candidate in order for that person to receive a scholarship.
These communications generally contain dangerous links that could lead to fraudulent websites. The authorities urged everyone not to open these links, even if the message appears to come from a known person.
According to the police, the scammers' aim is to obtain access to personal data. They can also take control of online profiles and continue to spread the fraud by using the compromised accounts.
The authorities' recommendations are to:
- Close the message without clicking on any link
- Verify the request directly with the allegedly requesting person
- Avoid entering banking information or personal identifiers
The Malta Police Corps reminded that "thought should come before the click" and urged that these communications be reported.
