Two women were arrested following allegations of pickpocketing in Valletta and admitted to theft-related charges in court.

Two women were arrested on Sunday following allegations of pickpocketing in Valletta. The arrests were made after a police officer who was patrolling near the City Gate was informed by a passerby that they had seen the two women stealing items from another woman.
The police officer proceeded towards the suspects and arrested them on the spot. The two women were brought before court on Tuesday where they admitted to theft-related charges.
These arrests came at a time when there is growing concern about pickpocketing incidents in Valletta, particularly with the start of the tourist season. According to reports, tour guides have spoken about an apparent increase in theft targeting both visitors and the guides themselves.
Ana De Barro, president of the Union of Tourist Guides of Malta, said that incidents had been reported recently around the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the city entrance and the bus terminus. She noted that whilst pickpocketing normally increases during the summer, this year there has been a more notable increase in reported cases.
