Cannabis smuggling at Warsaw airport

The Masovian National Tax Administration detected 44.9 kg of cannabis during baggage inspection at Chopin Airport in Warsaw — as reported by informator-stolicy.pl. Four packages of vacuum-sealed green dried material, wrapped in orange tape, were found in two suitcases sent from Bangkok.

The baggage owner turned out to be a 33-year-old Greek national. The man claimed he did not remember the code to open the suitcases. Following an initial drug test, the substance was identified as cannabis — the identity was subsequently confirmed by the Central Customs and Tax Laboratory in Otwock.

The arrested 33-year-old was charged with bringing in large quantities of narcotic substances. The court imposed temporary arrest for a period of three months. For this type of offence, the penalty is imprisonment from 3 to 20 years and a fine. The estimated black-market value of the secured drug exceeds 2.2 million zloty.

The case is being handled by the Masovian Customs and Tax Office in Warsaw under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office Warsaw-Ochota. This is the second case in the space of several days — several days earlier, officials seized 108.9 kg of cannabis hidden in exercise equipment in the warehouse of a courier company.
