Dominican "El Jamaquen" extradited to Puerto Rico on drug trafficking and money laundering charges

Dominican accused of narco offences handed over to US following presidential decree

According to elviajero.com.do, authorities in the Dominican Republic extradited David Armando Brito Brito, known as "El Jamaquen", identified as a member of a criminal organisation dedicated to drug trafficking, money laundering and other offences. The handover took place at José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport of the Americas (AILA), where US officials received him in custody and transferred him to Puerto Rico, the jurisdiction where he must appear before a court.

The extradition was formalised through decree 346-26, after exhausting the corresponding legal procedures to place the detainee at the disposal of US justice.

Arrest in May and Operation PT7

The case originated in May, when the Attorney General's Office of the Republic (PGR) reported the arrest of Brito Brito as a result of a series of raids carried out in different parts of the country: sectors of the National District, Santo Domingo Este and La Altagracia province. The arrest took place as part of the so-called Operation PT7, deployed against a structure identified for its links with organised crime.

Charges against him

The accusations faced by the Dominican include continuing a criminal organisation, conspiracy to introduce drugs into United States territory from abroad, and conspiracy to commit money laundering offences. Also included is alleged participation in a conspiracy to import five kilograms or more of a substance with detectable cocaine into the United States, as well as charges related to firearms possession.

Bilateral cooperation

Dominican authorities stressed that these operations are in line with the cooperation mechanisms established between the Dominican Republic and the United States to combat international structures dedicated to drug trafficking and money laundering. This coordination includes permanent intelligence sharing, the location and apprehension of individuals sought by US justice who are in Dominican territory, and the subsequent execution of extradition processes when authorised in accordance with the law.

"The arrest and subsequent extradition of the Dominican is part of joint work, cooperation and constant information exchange between the Dominican Republic and the United States to capture fugitives sought for committing drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, murder, rape and other offences," authorities explained.

With Brito Brito's departure, the case file falls under the jurisdiction of US authorities, who must present to the court the evidence and accusations that support the proceedings. AILA is confirmed once again as the usual departure point for the execution of extraditions under the security protocols established for this type of procedure.
