Woman to stand trial after attacking pregnant driver in Carolina
Prosecutors from Puerto Rico's Department of Justice presented charges on Tuesday against a motorist who was involved in an altercation with a pregnant woman last Saturday night in Carolina.
The accused, named Tasharelys Escalera, faces three charges: assault, disturbing the peace and property damage. As these are minor infractions, no bail was set and her case will proceed directly to trial on 20 July, according to Telemundo Puerto Rico.
The victim recounted on social media that everything began around 8:40 p.m. when she moved into the left lane with her turn signal on. At that moment, the other motorist began honking insistently.
Shortly afterwards, the aggressor braked her vehicle, got out armed with what appeared to be a sharp object and struck the bodywork of the other car, whilst shouting and attempting to force open one of the doors.
When the victim tried to leave and contact the authorities, the accused prevented her from doing so. The conflict escalated when the alleged attacker repeatedly collided with the victim's vehicle and subsequently punched her in the face, causing her mobile phone to fall to the ground.
The victim warned her that she was expecting a baby, but the other woman remained hostile and continued threatening her. Witnesses indicated that the suspected perpetrator appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was travelling with two minors on board.
The suspect fled before the arrival of police. The victim filed a formal complaint and subsequently attended a health centre due to abdominal pain resulting from the confrontation.
