During the morning of this Wednesday, uniformed officers conducted a raid in the municipality of Manatí as a result of a covert investigation that lasted approximately one year. The targets were individuals who, according to authorities, were trafficking in firearms and controlled substances illegally.
Joseph González, the top official of the Police, made statements on the radio programme Pegaos en la Mañana, broadcast on Radio Isla 1320. He detailed that officers conducted undercover purchases over several months, accumulating visual and audio evidence of the operations.
The Police commissioner clarified that this intervention is not linked to the violent crimes that have occurred recently in the northern part of the island, although he confirmed that those investigations are progressing and could yield results in the short term.
According to González, the investigation points to a pair of individuals who operated separately, allegedly engaged in the sale of pistols, rifles and controlled substances. He preferred not to release names or confirm the involvement of minors, as at the time of speaking the raid was still ongoing and some of those involved had yet to be apprehended.
The police institution committed to providing a full report once arrests have been completed and fiscal charges filed. This action is part of the police force's repeated strategy to halt arms trafficking and drug trafficking at multiple points across Puerto Rican territory.
