PSP Officer Who Killed Odair Moniz Remains Suspended from Duty
PSP officer Bruno Pinto, sentenced this week to three years and six months suspended sentence for the homicide of Odair Moniz, remains removed from the exercise of duties. The national director of the security force, Luís Carrilho, confirmed on Friday that the suspension remains in place.
Odair Moniz was shot dead in October 2024 in Cova da Moura, Amadora. The court found that the victim was not carrying any knife at the time of the incident. The decision on the officer's possible return to the force rests with the PSP, with the court referring the decision to the institution.
Luís Carrilho explained that the disciplinary process is being handled by the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI), a body that enjoys autonomy in this area. "The disciplinary process is not with the Public Security Police," he stressed, adding that the officer will be given a compatible role when circumstances permit.
The head of the PSP expressed "great solidarity" with Bruno Pinto, arguing that a police officer going through a situation of this nature seeks to "do their best".
Both the Public Prosecution Service and the defendant's defence have already announced their intention to appeal the sentence. The IGAI, for its part, indicated that the disciplinary procedure "is pending and awaiting the sending of the criminal process decision for analysis".
