André Ventura, leader of the Chega party, has revealed that he is the target of a fraud attempt that uses his identity to solicit money from Portuguese emigrants through the WhatsApp application. The case will be reported to the Judicial Police.
The scheme consists of sending messages containing a photograph of Ventura, taken during a television interview, accompanied by a quote from him about the difficulties faced by emigrants returning to Portugal. This is followed by a request for financial assistance in the amount of 50,000 euros, justified by the alleged need to recognise and value loyalty to the country.
The politician confirmed to Correio da Manhã that he became aware of the situation and considers the facts extremely serious. "They are asking for money in my name and in the name of Chega. It is extremely serious. We are going to report the situation to the PJ," he stated.
Ventura emphasised that this is not the first time his name and that of the party have been used improperly in fraud attempts, but he considers the current one more serious and more sophisticated than the previous ones.
The Judicial Police is now expected to investigate the case to identify those responsible for the improper use of the party leader's image and for the attempted unlawful acquisition of funds from the emigrant community.
