In the early hours of today, officers of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) thwarted an attempt to introduce drugs into Portuguese territory, seizing approximately 400 kg of cocaine near the Albarquel area. The information was reported by CNN Portugal.
The operation took shape when patrols specialising in coastal and maritime surveillance detected unusual behaviour within the Arrábida Natural Park. Officers deduced that the unloading of a prohibited shipment brought by sea was being prepared.
The response from authorities involved the deployment of equipment on land and in the air, enabling the interception of the cargo before it reached sales channels. Ten packages of the substance were collected, totalling approximately four hundred kilograms.
One of the presumed traffickers was captured, although the investigation continues in order to identify the remaining individuals involved. The operation also involved collaborators from the National Traffic Unit, the local Territorial Command and elements of the Maritime Police.
It is expected that the suspect will be questioned by a judicial magistrate before the end of the week, at which time a decision will be made regarding their procedural situation.
