Algerian detained in flagrante delicto in Aveiro with forged prescriptions for manufacturing "poor man's drug"

The Criminal Police in Aveiro detained a man of Algerian nationality, 34 years old, suspected of qualified fraud and drug trafficking, as noticiasdeaveiro.pt reported this week. The suspect had deliberately travelled to Portugal to acquire medicines using forged prescriptions.

The detention took place in flagrante delicto, within the scope of several investigations related to the illegal purchase of Rivotril, Tramadol and Pregabalin. According to the Criminal Police, the medicines were intended for the production of recreational drugs known as "Karkubi" — in the case of Rivotril — or for direct consumption, in the cases of Tramadol and Pregabalin, the latter commonly referred to as "poor man's drug".

The pharmaceuticals acquired would subsequently be transported and commercialised in third countries, according to the police statement. During the proceedings, the Criminal Police seized several medical prescriptions capable of being used multiple times.

The investigation also emphasises the financial impact of this type of crime: the suspect's actions caused "considerable harm to the public purse", given the level of subsidy assumed by the State in the acquisition of these medicines, recalls the Criminal Police.

The detainee awaits presentation to the judicial authorities in the district of Aveiro, where the appropriate coercive measures will be determined.
