Arrested red-handed with fake prescriptions for drug production
Judicial Police (PJ) in Aveiro arrested a 34-year-old man red-handed, suspected of using forged medical prescriptions to acquire medicines intended for the manufacture and consumption of drugs, CNN Portugal reports.
According to a PJ statement, investigations focused on the irregular purchase of substances such as Rivotril, Tramadol and Pregabalin through fake prescriptions. The suspect was in national territory precisely for this purpose.
"At issue is the obtaining of large quantities of medicines that are used to manufacture recreational drugs known as 'Karkubi', in the case of Rivotril, or to consume directly, in the cases of Tramadol and Pregabalin, the latter commonly known as the 'Poor Man's Drug', and which would be transported and traded in third countries," the PJ press release states.
During the proceedings, authorities seized various prescriptions that could be used repeatedly to acquire the medicines.
The PJ further emphasises that this type of criminal activity causes significant damage to the public purse, given the high level of state subsidisation in the purchase of the drugs in question.
The arrested man, charged with the crimes of qualified fraud and drug trafficking, will be presented for his first judicial interrogation for the application of precautionary measures deemed appropriate.
