73-year-old hunter detained in Cantanhede with eight weapons following cat shooting death

An investigation into the death of a cat shot dead resulted in the seizure of eight firearms from a 73-year-old hunter living in the Tocha area, Cantanhede, according to Correio da Manhã. The operation, conducted by the GNR, originated from a report naming the suspect as responsible for the animal's death.
According to a GNR source cited by Correio da Manhã, the case was assigned to the Environmental Crimes and Violations Investigation Unit of the Nature and Environment Protection Service. Investigators carried out a home search and seven vehicle searches belonging to the suspect.
The searches resulted in the seizure of five hunting rifles, two air-powered weapons and one personal defence weapon. Two of these weapons — one hunting rifle and the personal defence weapon — are illegal.
A total of 171 cartridges and 71 rounds of ammunition were also seized.
The man was named as a suspect for the crime of possession of an illegal weapon. He is also facing charges for the crime of killing and causing suffering to a companion animal.
