Couple arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into Vila Real prison

A 27-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, the latter an inmate at Vila Real Prison Establishment, were apprehended by officers from the Judicial Police. The operation was carried out with the support of services from that penitentiary facility.

The young woman travelled to the location for a visit to her partner. Hidden inside her body, she was transporting doses of heroin and cocaine properly wrapped. During the meeting, she handed the material to the inmate, who concealed it in the same manner within his body.

The authorities suspected the operation and intercepted the man shortly afterwards. Forced to expel what he had inside him, the drugs were collected by investigators. Both were arrested in flagrante delicto.

The case is part of an inquiry conducted by the local Public Prosecutor's Office. Investigators believe that the scheme to bring narcotics into the prison had previously been used by the pair.

The visitor will be brought before a judge to be questioned and for coercive measures to be defined. As for the detainee who was serving a sentence, the decision about his fate will be made by the courts.
