Military personnel from the GNR seized a cargo of approximately 3,650 litres of fuel in the municipality of Grândola in Setúbal district. During the operation, carried out on Tuesday, two individuals — aged 24 and 56 — were formally charged. The information was disclosed on Wednesday by the Setúbal Territorial Command, according to reporting by Correio da Manhã.
The intervention took place within the framework of a road inspection carried out by the Setúbal Traffic Detachment. Officers approached a light commercial vehicle that appeared to be transporting weight above the permitted limit. Upon inspecting the cargo, they discovered dozens of jerrycans filled with fuel, stored without the safety regulations required for this type of transport.
Subsequent investigations pointed to the possibility that the fuel served as logistical support for international drug trafficking operations.
In addition to the inflammable liquid, the authorities retained the vehicle, 52 empty containers and three mobile phones. The driver and the passenger were required to provide a statement of identity and residence. The case was referred to the Grândola Court of Law.
