The man who was driving the vehicle that struck 16 people on Rua da Oura in Albufeira is named Fábio, works as a car mechanic and resides in the Lisbon area. Born in Angola, he holds Portuguese nationality. According to Correio da Manhã, Fábio assured authorities that he was on holiday in the Algarve and had no intention of striking anyone.
Among the victims are two military personnel from the GNR. The incident occurred in a nightlife entertainment area, a circumstance that the Judiciary Police is analysing with particular attention to determine whether there was any motivation behind the mass vehicle strike.
Fábio is charged with attempted homicide, dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was presented before a judge on Wednesday, but the formal interrogation will only begin on Thursday, when it will be determined whether he remains in preventive custody or is released.
The PJ is currently carrying out a detailed investigation into the suspect's life, seeking to establish whether there are elements in his history that might help clarify the circumstances of the vehicle strike.
