Overall crime up 10.9% in Porto Metropolitan Command
Overall crime increased by 10.9% in the area of Porto Metropolitan Command, whilst violent and serious crime declined by 8.4%, according to provisional PSP data.
Crime in Porto up nearly 11%, but serious violence declines
Overall crime recorded an increase of 10.9% in the area of Porto Metropolitan Command compared with the same period of the previous year, according to provisional data from the National PSP Directorate released by Lusa news agency and reported by Correio da Manhã. In the opposite direction, violent and serious crime fell by 8.4%.
Crimes detected on the police's own initiative — within the scope of daily activity — recorded a rise of 17.5%, according to the same source.
Lisbon and Setúbal with distinct trends
In the area of Lisbon Metropolitan Command, overall crime grew by 2.9%, whilst violent and serious crimes fell by 0.4%. "Police proactivity crimes increased by 7.2%", stated the National PSP Directorate in response to questions raised by Lusa.
Setúbal District Command recorded a different trajectory: overall crime fell by 7.4% and violent and serious crime declined by 13%.
Theft and non-compliance among crimes with greatest variation
The three categories with the largest variations — among crimes that cause the greatest social alarm — were pickpocketing, other thefts from motor vehicles and non-compliance, according to the National PSP Directorate.
The PSP stated that it is monitoring occurrences that generate the greatest concern in communities, following situations at local and national level, and directing resources to combat "specific phenomena that are emerging" and feelings of insecurity.
Among the measures listed by the institution are increased preventive policing, support from other units to reactive policing, special criminal prevention operations and investigative actions.
