Man detained in Azores following random knife attack on restaurant worker
A 32-year-old man has been apprehended by the Judicial Police on the island of São Miguel, pursuant to warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office. The man is accused of attempting to kill a restaurant employee using a sharp object.
The assault occurred on 12 April. The alleged perpetrator went to a dining establishment and surprised an employee who was tidying up the exterior of the premises. The attacker inflicted several wounds to the torso of the employee.
The injured person is 35 years old and is not Portuguese. There was no prior connection between the two individuals. Evidence collected suggests that the employee was the target of a chance selection, in a scenario where the use of synthetic drugs may have influenced the assailant's behaviour.
The detainee was brought before the courts, which imposed the coercive measure of pre-trial imprisonment.
