The Judicial Police detained a 41-year-old man, accused of starting a fire that consumed five makeshift dwellings located in the Galinheiras neighbourhood, in the Portuguese capital. The incident occurred on 13 June, during the afternoon.
According to the police force, the man used direct flame to start the fire, motivated by family conflicts and a desire for retaliation. The terrain where the structures were situated was uneven and covered by thick vegetation. Of the five destroyed houses, one was inhabited by the suspect himself, whilst the others belonged to his relatives.
In addition to the dwellings, five family vehicles were also destroyed by the flames.
The alert was raised at approximately 17:30. The Fire Service fought the fire, which caused several explosions heard at the scene, forcing the evacuation of residents.
The Parish Council of Santa Clara informed that 15 people were left homeless, having received support from Lisbon's Civil Protection and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
The defendant will be brought before the court for initial questioning and a decision on possible coercive measures.
