Carjacking suspects of parcel distributor caught with help of GPS

Two men aged 24 and 34 were arrested in Caldas da Rainha, in the district of Leiria, suspected of having stolen a parcel distribution vehicle in Rio de Mouro, in the municipality of Sintra, using the carjacking method. Correio da Manhã reports that PSP confirmed the arrests this Friday.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday, in the Rinchoa area, when the van driver was preparing to leave the vehicle. One of the suspects approached him aggressively, grabbing and pulling him whilst keeping one hand hidden inside his pocket — a gesture that led the victim to fear that the individual was armed, according to a statement from the Public Security Police.

The two suspects then entered the van and fled, hitting the victim with the lateral mirror of the vehicle during the escape.

GPS allows route to be tracked in real time

The robbery was immediately reported at the Porto Salvo PSP station. The fact that the vehicle had an installed location system allowed the authorities to track, in real time, the route taken by the two men. The interception was carried out by PSP in Caldas da Rainha, in an operation conducted in coordination with the District Command of Leiria of PSP and with the collaboration of the National Republican Guard (GNR) in Caldas da Rainha.

The swift recovery of the vehicle also made it possible to preserve the cargo that was inside, intended for parcel distribution. During the operation, a firearm replica was seized from one of the suspects.

Both residents of Caldas da Rainha and already flagged by authorities

The two arrested men reside in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha and were already flagged by authorities as suspects in various thefts that occurred in the city, crimes that are being investigated by PSP. The suspects will be brought before court for application of the respective coercive measures.
