A former GNR captain from Fafe was brought to trial in Porto, accused of being part of a network that brought more than 1.3 tonnes of cocaine into Portugal through Leixões Port. The drug was hidden in a container with animal hides, originating from South America.
The defendant was arrested in August last year by the Judicial Police, along with his wife and brother. The operation culminated an investigation by the National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking.
The trial is taking place in a collective court in Porto. The former military officer is suspected of being part of an organisation that used Leixões port as an entry point for large quantities of cocaine destined for the European market.
