Alice Xavier believes her mother, who died at the age of 100 two weeks ago, "died of hunger". The elderly woman stayed in one of the clandestine apartments in Lousada closed by the GNR last Wednesday, and her daughter filed a complaint with the police.
In 2023, the octogenarian was placed in one of those care homes. Within just two months, her state of health deteriorated drastically. "My mother stopped walking. She was not eating, she lost a lot of weight. They said she was very stubborn and was always facing the wall, half asleep. She lost her mental faculties in that short time she was there," Alice Xavier described to Correio da Manhã.
The residences were managed by Rogério and Carla, the main defendants in the Public Prosecutor's investigation. The couple charged between 800 and 1,000 euros per month for each resident, keeping the elderly in degrading conditions. In the four deaths attributed to them, the authorities suspect that the victims were deprived of food and water.
The GNR operation resulted in the detention of seven suspects and the closure of nine illegal care homes in the municipality of Lousada. Eleven elderly people were removed from the facilities and referred to social support services from Social Security.
