The office of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reported to the authorities a fraud scheme that uses the name of the head of Government and his chief of staff to deceive citizens through email and the WhatsApp application.
In an official statement, the São Bento residence warned that numerous people have been contacted by messages invoking the identity of Montenegro and his director of staff. The authors of the scheme are requesting that victims sign a supposed confidentiality agreement, in an attempt to obtain personal data or other types of sensitive information.
The Government clarified that a complaint has already been filed with the competent entities to investigate the case. No details have been disclosed about the number of people affected or about the exact content of the messages sent.
This type of fraud, known as phishing or identity theft, has the unlawful objective of exploiting the trust of recipients in the figure of the Prime Minister to obtain financial advantages or access to private information.
The official residence appealed to the public not to respond to suspicious messages and to report any contact of this nature to police authorities.
