The office supporting the Portuguese head of Government issued a statement on Monday warning the public about a fraud attempt that exploits the image of Luís Montenegro and his principal adviser, Pedro Perestrelo Pinto.
According to the note released, various citizens have been targeted by contacts made via email and the WhatsApp mobile application. The perpetrators of the scheme impersonate the holder of the office of São Bento and his closest collaborator, requesting that victims sign a confidentiality document.
Montenegro's team confirmed that it has already filed a complaint with the organisations responsible for investigating this type of illegal activity, as reported by Público.
The exact scale of the campaign was not disclosed and there is no information about when the fraudulent activity began. The case falls within the category of cybercrime, namely computer fraud and identity forgery.
