The GNR closed nine residences that were operating illegally as elderly care homes and detained seven suspects for abuse, according to Correio da Manhã. The defendants are also charged with homicide, kidnapping, fraud and deception.
The facilities were housing 11 elderly residents—nine women and two men—aged between 78 and 95 years. All were removed from the premises during the operation.
Despite the precarious conditions and lack of licensing, each resident paid 800 euros per month for the services provided. In at least four cases, elderly women are believed to have died of starvation in these facilities.
The operation took place in the Lousada area, where residents closely followed the authorities' intervention. "Many people already knew about this. At least let this shameful situation end now!", said a local resident during the operation.
