European operation against labour trafficking results in four defendants in Portugal

The Judicial Police identified nine suspected victims of human trafficking for labour exploitation in Portugal and constituted four defendants as part of a coordinated European operation, according to a statement from the PJ. The case was disclosed this Friday, as reported by observador.pt.

The PJ participated in the operation through the National Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Directorates of the North and South. Among the defendants are a woman, two men and a company, all of Portuguese nationality. The nine identified victims are foreign nationals, all linked to the catering sector.

In Portugal, the operation also involved the Authority for Working Conditions, the National Republican Guard, the Maritime Police and the Tax and Customs Authority, distributed across various regions of the country. The interventions focused mainly on the sectors of construction, agriculture, catering, commerce, ports and maritime infrastructure.

The major operation, led by Europol and the European Labour Authority, identified 429 people in Portugal, of whom 167 were of Portuguese nationality. All foreign nationals identified had documentation in order or in the process of regularisation.

At European level, the operation took place between 14 and 20 September in 34 countries, resulting in the detention of 27 people and the identification of 248 potential victims of human trafficking.
