Trial of pilot for murder with sabre begins in Évora
The trial of Pedro Gonçalves, an aviation pilot accused of killing Pedro Fanico with a sabre in August 2023, began on Tuesday in Évora Court, according to sicnoticias.pt. The proceedings take place with a jury court and behind closed doors.
The facts date back to August 2023, when Fanico entered a rural tourism unit managed by the defendant in Montemor-o-Novo. According to the defence, the victim was armed with a knife. Pedro Gonçalves then allegedly took a sword that he regularly kept underneath his bed and delivered 16 blows to Fanico. The defendant subsequently called for emergency services, but the victim could not be saved.
Gonçalves arrived at court in silence and has maintained the self-defence argument from the outset. The investigating judge initially accepted that argument and released the defendant, but the Public Ministry and the interested parties appealed to the Court of Appeal, which upheld the appeal and determined that the trial should proceed.
