Detained red-handed with forged prescriptions to obtain medications for trafficking
Aveiro's Criminal Police detained a 34-year-old man suspected of acquiring medications through forged prescriptions to produce recreational drugs or for international trafficking, according to Observador.
The suspect was in Portugal intentionally to purchase Rivotril, Tramadol and Pregabalin. The detention occurred in flagrante delicto, as part of several investigations that the Criminal Police were conducting into the illicit purchase of these substances using falsified documentation.
In a statement, the Criminal Police explained that Rivotril was intended for the manufacture of recreational drugs known as "Karkubi", whilst Tramadol and Pregabalin would be for direct consumption. Pregabalin, referred to by the Criminal Police as commonly called "Poor Man's Drug", would subsequently be transported and sold in third countries.
During proceedings, various prescriptions likely to be used multiple times were seized, which suggests a systematic and repeated practice.
The Criminal Police also emphasised that this type of criminality results in significant damage to the public treasury, given that the State subsidises these medications to a considerable extent.
The detainee faces charges of qualified fraud and drug trafficking, and is to be brought before a judge for an initial hearing to determine applicable coercive measures.
