Suspect in two forest fires detained in Figueira da Foz

The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) detained on Tuesday a 51-year-old man suspected of having started two forest fires on Sunday in the parish of Quiaios, in the municipality of Figueira da Foz, as reported by observador.pt.

In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the PJ indicated that the suspect reportedly caused the fires "through direct flame, near forest paths, in areas with extensive forest cover and adjoining urban zones", in the locality of Cova da Serpe. The fires "would not have reached more serious proportions without the rapid intervention of the fire brigade", the authority added.

The operation was conducted by the PJ's Central Directorate, with support from the GNR in Montemor-o-Velho. The detainee will be brought before the Judicial Court of Coimbra for initial interrogation and the application of any preventive measures.

At the time the alert was raised for the second fire, at 16:20 on Sunday, a vehicle from the Figueira da Foz Volunteer Fire Brigade suffered an accident on leaving the station, which resulted in five injured persons, all occupants of the vehicle.
