The Judicial Police arrested a 43-year-old man on Tuesday in the Greater Lisbon region on suspicion of having facilitated the escape of five inmates from Vale de Judeus Prison in September 2024. According to rr.pt, the detainee is the son of Fernando Ferreira, one of the prisoners who escaped from jail, Jornal de Notícias reported.

The suspect has been charged with the crimes of prison break and illegal possession of firearms, the Judicial Police indicated in a statement. He will be presented before a judge on Wednesday to have the applied precautionary measures decided.

Operation "Sapatada" involved 70 Judicial Police inspectors and resulted in seven house searches and 25 individuals formally constituted as suspects. The authorities seized two cars, two Kalashnikov machine guns, ammunition of various calibres and electronic equipment capable of interfering with radio communications, mobile signals, GPS signals and other transmission systems.

In the same operation, two radios with military characteristics, two tactical helmets, a ballistic vest, a ammunition reloading press and 32,500 euros in cash were also recovered.

The escape of the five inmates occurred on 7 September 2024. All of the escapees were recaptured between 6 October 2024 and 6 February 2025.
