A 48-year-old man, with a drug addiction, was arrested in Porto da Cruz, Madeira, for sexually abusing his own mother, a 92-year-old woman who has Alzheimer's disease and is wholly dependent.

Authorities arrested a 48-year-old individual in the locality of Porto da Cruz, on the island of Madeira, on suspicion of having sexually abused his own mother, an elderly woman of 92 years. The woman suffers from Alzheimer's disease and is wholly dependent on care from third parties. The suspect was brought before court and remanded in custody. The information was disclosed by Correio da Manhã.
The Public Prosecutor indicates that the crimes in question include sexual abuse of a person lacking capacity to resist, assault occasioning bodily harm of a minor nature, and coercion. The defendant, who uses drugs, took advantage of the fact that his sister — the habitual carer of his mother — was not at home to commit the abuses.
The sister surprised the suspect at the moment she returned to the residence. Confronted, the man reacted with threats and physically assaulted the family member, which prompted the PSP to attend the location.
Because the victim lacks the capacity to understand the meaning of the right to lodge a complaint and does not have a legal representative, the Public Prosecutor decided to assume that role, initiating the criminal process for the protection of the elderly woman.
The investigation continues to be conducted by the Judicial Police.
