Google News PT — Crime reports that the Judicial Police (PJ) arrested a man at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon following an international cooperation operation that identified suspicious movements linked to drug trafficking.
The suspect, from South America, was carrying a suitcase containing 3.4 kilograms of cocaine. The PJ identified him as a transporter working for a criminal organisation — a mechanism used to "reduce the exposure of individuals who hold positions of greater responsibility in the criminal chain", according to a statement from the authority.
The information had been previously transmitted to Portuguese authorities as part of an international cooperation action, which allowed the police intervention to be directed and procedures at the airport to be initiated, the PJ explained.
The security force added that the use of transporters serves to "compartmentalise illicit activity and hinder the identification of those responsible for organising, financing and coordinating operations".
According to the ongoing investigation, the PJ suspects that the cocaine seized would be distributed in Portugal and not in other European countries.
The arrested person will be brought before an investigating judge for initial questioning and for the application of respective coercive measures.
