The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested a foreign national at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon following a joint operation with foreign police authorities. The suspect had arrived from a South American country and was transporting 3.4 kilograms of cocaine hidden in luggage, according to reporting by Correio da Manhã.
The drug was discovered following an inspection of the detainee's luggage. Authorities immediately carried out the necessary screening tests, which confirmed the substance to be cocaine. The narcotic was intended for the domestic market.
According to the PJ, the man was acting as a drug mule and appeared to be, by all accounts, "integrated into a criminal structure with transnational dimensions and with defined functions at the level of recruitment, transport and subsequent distribution" of narcotics. Ongoing investigations aim to determine the extent of the network's activity and identify any other parties responsible.
The detainee will be brought before a court for the first hearing for the application of appropriate coercive measures.
