Man arrested in Porto after mistreating mother and grandmother and appropriating their pensions

Man arrested in Porto for keeping mother and grandmother locked in bedroom to obtain pensions
Porto police arrested a 46-year-old man on Wednesday at 11:00 on Rua Doutor Carlos Passos with an outstanding arrest warrant for execution of a prison sentence for ill-treatment of elderly relatives. According to Correio da Manhã, the suspect was immediately taken to a prison facility.
The man had been tried and sentenced to four years and nine months in effective prison by the courts for crimes committed since 2015 against his mother, aged 68, and his grandmother, aged 92, both residing in Porto. Since at least 2013, he had acted as an informal carer for the two women, with the grandmother being bedridden.
The court established that the defendant repeatedly assaulted the two victims and confined them within the home in order to appropriate money from their pensions. The women were kept locked in a bedroom, where they ate and met their physiological needs. The space had a nauseating odour and did not meet minimum hygiene conditions.
The convicted man also prevented access by solidarity organisations that sought to provide support to the victims and opposed the carrying out of home medical visits.
