A 34-year-old individual was captured by the Judicial Police on suspicion of four robberies in the Elvas and Campo Maior region in Portalegre district. The criminal investigation judge in Elvas ordered the defendant to await trial in prison.

According to the local Public Prosecutor's office, the offences were perpetrated between 21 May and 2 June. The method consisted of identifying more vulnerable people who were walking alone in the streets. Using physical violence, the suspect would tear the gold items they were wearing around their neck from them.

The investigation advanced with the issuing of arrest warrants and searches of a residence and a vehicle. In the course of these operations, authorities discovered a document proving the sale of precious objects in gold metal.

The Public Prosecutor's representative brought the defendant to court on Friday. After the initial interrogation, the magistrate decided to keep the detainee in provisional custody. The inquiry continues under the direction of the Elvas Public Prosecutor's office.
