A man filed a complaint with the Judicial Police (PJ) in Lisbon after losing one thousand euros in an SMS scam, according to reporting by Correio da Manhã. The message, which appeared on the victim's mobile phone with the sender identified as 'Caixa', claimed it was necessary to unlock the bank card.
The victim, who holds an account with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, considered the message legitimate and called the number indicated. On the other end, a female voice answered who identified herself as an employee of the bank's customer support line. The conversation ended with the victim being persuaded to make two bank transfers, totalling one thousand euros.
The fraud was only detected when the victim attempted to use the card again. The device remained blocked, making it clear that the unlock had never been carried out and that the individuals involved were impostors.
