Man detained in Porto for theft and knife threat held in pre-trial detention

Google News PT — Crime (pt) reports that a 25-year-old man was detained on Tuesday in Porto, suspected of stealing the handbag of a 16-year-old teenager and threatening a family member of the victim with a knife when the family member attempted to stop him. The court ordered pre-trial detention as a precautionary measure, announced the PSP on Thursday.

According to the PSP statement, the suspect took advantage of the open car windows where the teenager was travelling in the back seat to steal the handbag, valued at 850 euros, which he had in his possession when he was intercepted.

A family member of the victim heard a cry for help and went after the suspect, managing to grab him by the arm. The man withdrew after the suspect displayed a knife in a threatening manner.

The family member did not give up: he followed the suspect at a distance and, upon detecting police presence in the vicinity, asked for help. Municipal Police officers intercepted and detained the man, who still had the stolen items on him.

After being brought before the judicial authorities, the detainee was remanded in pre-trial detention.
