A 34-year-old man jumped from the eighth floor of a building in Santarém with his four-year-old daughter in his arms, resulting in the death of both. The incident occurred just two days after the child's mother attended the PSP police station to withdraw a domestic violence complaint against her partner.
The first criminal complaint concerning mistreatment in a family context dates back to 2024 and was subsequently archived. A second complaint was filed a few weeks before the tragedy and was still ongoing. Last Friday, the woman appeared before the police authorities in Santarém, where she stated that she had resumed the conjugal relationship and intended to abandon the proceedings. During questioning, she even praised the aggressor, describing him as "a good father" who "sometimes had flights of fancy".
The incident sparked a debate about the failures in Portugal's system of protection for victims of domestic violence. The case was reported by Correio da Manhã.
The girl, named Kiara, lost her life at the point of impact. The father also did not survive the fall.
