Fugitive Brazilian murderer detained in Portugal by Judicial Police after 20 years
A 43-year-old man sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for homicide in Brazil has been detained in Portugal by the Judicial Police. The crime occurred in August 2005 in Minas Gerais.

The Judicial Police detained in Portugal a 43-year-old man convicted in Brazil of two homicide offences — one completed and another in attempted form. According to Correio da Manhã, the facts date back to August 2005 in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, and the suspect had been a fugitive from the country.
According to the Judicial Police, the detainee acted "in joint commission, forced entry into the victims' residence and proceeded to fire several shots". One of the shots fatally struck one of the victims. The other survived, in the words of the Judicial Police, "by chance alone". Following the attack, the suspect and an accomplice abandoned the scene aboard a motorcycle.
For the two crimes, the man was sentenced by Brazilian courts to 14 years' imprisonment, a sentence which remains to be served in full. Following his detention in Portugal, he was brought before the Court of Appeal in Évora and is being held in preventive custody, awaiting the "further proceedings of the extradition process".
