A 37-year-old educator is suspected of assaulting at least 16 children just over a year old at an institution in Fafe. The case was reported by an auxiliary worker and is being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Investigation into educator in Fafe for mistreatment of babies in nursery
At least 16 babies just over a year old are believed to have been victims of mistreatment at a nursery run by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Fafe, over a period of three months. The suspect is an early childhood educator aged 37, whose behaviour was reported by an auxiliary worker at the institution.
According to what is known, the woman is alleged to have resorted to smacking, shouting and insults against the children, both in the refectory and in one of the rooms of nursery number 2. In addition, she is said to have forced the babies to eat after they spilled water.
The report was made to the Provedor of the Santa Casa, who decided to suspend the educator. In response to this measure, the suspect submitted her resignation. The Provedor referred the matter to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Fafe and ordered the opening of an internal inquiry to determine how many times the assaults occurred and who witnessed them.
Two members of staff at the nursery are also the subject of the internal inquiry, for allegedly witnessing the mistreatment without taking any action. Following the disclosure of the case, numerous parents chose to withdraw their children from the institution.
