An archived investigation into the publication of confidential Navy information in 2018 has become active again. The reopening was ordered by the Public Ministry after the Judicial Police detected links within another case related to the Lusitano Armillary Movement.
Nine suspects, identified as members of this far-right organisation, were formally charged with terrorism on 17 June. The charges allege that they conspired to carry out attacks against political figures, political parties, communications professionals, and researchers from the academic sector.
During telephone wiretaps carried out in that case, evidence emerged pointing to the older case of disclosure of classified material. The Judicial Police alerted the Military Judicial Police, which requested the reactivation of the inquiry for breach of secrecy and espionage, previously closed between 2020 and 2022.
The Lisbon District Public Ministry authorised the resumption, citing a rule in the Criminal Procedure Code that permits reopening cases when new evidence emerges. The statute of limitations expires only on 5 December 2028.
