20-year-old arrested in Coimbra on child pornography charges
The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested a 20-year-old individual in the municipality of Coimbra on Thursday, on suspicion of child pornography offences. The illicit activities are believed to have occurred between 2023 and 2026.
The arrest resulted from an international alert issued by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), a child protection organisation based in the United States. Technicians from the organisation discovered a Portuguese IP address linked to the circulation of prohibited content.
A team from the Police's Central Regional Directorate carried out searches and confiscated the suspect's mobile phone. The device contained hundreds of image and video files distributed to third parties, consistent with situations involving violence and sexual exploitation of minors, with the majority of the children aged under 10 years.
Camilo Oliveira, deputy head of that police unit, clarified that the young man was caught in the act. The official emphasised that the seriousness of the case stems from the fact that minors were being subjected to sexual abuse, with these moments being filmed or photographed and subsequently exchanged amongst various people.
The investigation is ongoing to clarify all details.
