PJ director authorises use of confiscated assets from trafficker
According to Google News PT, the national director of the Judicial Police, Luís Neves, authorised the use of various assets seized from the drug trafficker known as "Xuxas" — not only the motor vehicle that generated controversy in recent weeks, but also other assets confiscated as part of the judicial proceedings.
The information emerged following reports stating that Neves was circulating in a vehicle requisitioned from the PJ that had been seized from the alleged largest drug trafficker in Portugal. The case prompted extensive coverage from various Portuguese news media outlets, including SIC Notícias, Jornal de Negócios, Observador, Expresso and Público.
Expresso also revealed that the PJ official had used, in addition to the car, a Portuguese Air Force aircraft and an Intercidades train operated by CP. The Minister of Internal Administration also drove the seized vehicle, according to Jornal de Negócios.
The use of assets seized by security force officials is not unprecedented in Portugal, being regulated by internal provisions of the institutions. However, the case of Luís Neves raised public questions about the appropriateness and transparency of the procedure, given the notoriety of the judicial proceedings in question.
