Eulália Silva, 48, was remanded in custody by Vila Pouca de Aguiar Court, accused of killing her eight-year-old stepdaughter and concealing the body in the Padrela mountain range.
During the instruction hearing, the defendant wept, shouted and almost fainted upon learning of the restraint measure. She told the examining magistrate that she suffers from memory lapses and panic attacks, claiming a pattern of abuse. She stated she does not recall killing the girl Lara.
According to the account given in court, Eulália Silva remembers only taking her stepdaughter to the mountain range, but does not know what happened afterwards. "Then she fell, died and I panicked. I fled," she told the magistrate.
The child, eight years old, is believed to have been suffocated on Wednesday, the day she disappeared from the house where she lived in Celeirós, Valpaços. The body was subsequently found in the Padrela mountain range, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar.
The woman is charged with qualified homicide and concealment of a body.
