Several hundreds of people gathered in the capital on Saturday to repudiate the sentence applied to police officer Bruno Pinto, convicted of the death of Odair Moniz in the locality of Cova da Moura during the past year.
The initiative came from the Vida Justa collective. The participants, some with percussion instruments and placards, travelled through the streets between São Domingos and the space dedicated to José Saramago. The chosen motto was "Without justice there is no peace".
The demonstrators criticised the fact that the officer was punished with three and a half years in prison with suspension of execution, remaining in active service. The group denounced what it classifies as a reversal of positions between victims and the guilty, where those who suffer racial discrimination and abuse of authority end up being held responsible.
The collective also pointed to patterns of bias in the judicial system, which it considers permeable to institutional racial prejudices.
Although the court did not decree effective imprisonment for Bruno Pinto, it established that he must pay 90,000 euros in compensation, a sum intended mainly for the immediate family members of Odair Moniz, including his descendants and spouse.
