Robber from 'Rolex gang' dies after pursuit in Lisbon

A member of the so-called 'Rolex gang' died on Tuesday, shortly after 13:00, on Avenida de Berlim in Lisbon, after being struck by the driver from whom he had just stolen a luxury watch and a chain. Correio da Manhã reports that the robbers waited for the victim to exit a hotel before attacking him at a traffic light.

Sub-commissioner Rúben Neves, PSP spokesperson, confirmed that the death occurred in the context of a robbery committed by four individuals on board two motorcycles. According to Neves, one of the motorcycles collided with the victim's vehicle in an attempt to force it to stop, after which a second motorcycle appeared whose occupants displayed a firearm, though no shots were fired.

"After the robbery, the driver of the vehicle pursued the motorcycles, striking one of them. Following the crash of that motorcycle, the passenger fell and became unresponsive. He would die at the scene," the sub-commissioner reported.

The driver of the crashed motorcycle fled the scene, as did the occupants of the second motorcycle. A firearm was found next to the body of the suspect.

Victim born in Switzerland, Portuguese national

The driver of the car, who hit the robber during the pursuit, was born in Switzerland but holds Portuguese nationality and resides in the Braga area. The case was handed over to the Polícia Judiciária, which carried out examination of the scene, with traffic blocked in both directions on Avenida de Berlim.

Series of robberies the previous weekend

Tuesday's incident comes in the wake of two robberies that occurred during the weekend, both by snatching, which the PSP reported to Lusa news agency.

On Saturday, two suspects stole a luxury watch valued at 52,000 euros at Intendente Metro station, fleeing afterwards. On Sunday, at around 18:00, another watch robbery — this one valued at 18,000 euros — occurred on Avenida da Liberdade, with the two suspects fleeing by car. In both cases, the suspects are associated with the Rolex gang.

Three of the four robbers involved in Tuesday's incident remain at large. The investigation is being handled by the Polícia Judiciária.
