A GNR soldier fired into the air with his service weapon at the Portalegre Training Centre on the morning of Friday, 26 June, without causing any injuries or material damage, according to dn.pt.
The GNR's Communications and Public Relations Division confirmed to the Lusa news agency that the soldier was on internal duty at the training centre at the time of the incident. According to the same source, the soldier "appeared to be experiencing psychological instability" and was "immediately accompanied" by the guard's clinical services, with the situation being "promptly brought under control".
Another police source told Lusa that the soldier was subsequently "referred for compulsory hospitalisation at a hospital unit in Lisbon".
The Minister for Internal Administration, Luís Neves, was in Portalegre that day for the flag-swearing ceremony of 652 provisional GNR guards, held at the Municipal Stadium — an area of the city distinct from the Training Centre, where the shots were fired. Rádio Renascença reported that, following the ceremony, the minister was lunching with the GNR's Commander-General at the Training Centre when the incident occurred.
The GNR did not clarify whether Luís Neves directly witnessed the incident, but indicated that the occurrence was "immediately" reported to the competent authorities, namely the Military Judicial Police and the Public Prosecution Service.
