Woman arrested in Vila Pouca de Aguiar for murder of eight-year-old stepdaughter
A 33-year-old defendant was this Friday remanded in custody by Vila Pouca de Aguiar Court, suspected of killing her eight-year-old stepdaughter in the Padrela mountains, in the municipality of Valpaços.
During her first judicial interrogation, Eulália wept and denied responsibility for the crime, claiming that she heard voices. "It wasn't me who was killing Lara, I was never the one who did this," she stated in court.
The suspect's legal representative indicated that they will not contest the coercive measure, but will request a psychiatric evaluation. According to the lawyer, the defendant cooperated with the investigation and admitted several facts. "She showed great remorse, she does not know why she did it, but it does not minimise and does not erase the death of a child. It is a horrible crime," the defence stated.
Regarding the possibility of non-imputability, the lawyer considered that "it is still too early" and that it is necessary to confirm the "family context". The defence clarified that there is no complaint for domestic violence, only "some complaints to the CPCJ" (Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People).
The girl's body was found in the early hours of Thursday morning, close to her schoolbag. The stepmother had confessed the murder to the Criminal Police and assisted in the search to find the body.
Before the authorities, Eulália explained that she intended to take revenge on her partner, Carlos, the victim's father. "I didn't want to harm the child," she said. The woman took the child to the mountainous area and the conversation they had there ended tragically, with Lara dying from asphyxiation.
