A 22-year-old woman, Diana Pardal, was sent to Tires women's prison in December 2024, on suspicion of participating in a drug-trafficking network that operated in the Alto Alentejo region. At the time of her detention, she had given birth to a baby boy just four weeks earlier.
The child is currently one and a half years old. The minor has lived inside the prison facility, where he attends the nursery designated for the children of inmates. The legal proceedings begin this Monday at Portalegre Court, with the accused standing trial alongside 15 other co-defendants. Among these are her closest family members: her mother, father, brother and partner, all equally held on remand.
The operation that dismantled the organisation was conducted by the GNR. According to information provided by Correio da Manhã, Diana's mother is also serving a custodial measure in the same prison.
The lawyer for Liliana Arraia, the mother of the main accused, spoke to the same newspaper about the effects of prolonged remand detention. Pedro Pestana warned of the possibility that the boy could continue to reside in the prison facility, considering that the repeated application of this precautionary measure is causing serious harm to the family unit and to the child's development.
